Blog Star: A Parody for Bloggers

by Telling Dad on November 23, 2013

Time for another blogging parody!

I was inspired to write this particular song after having my Guest Speaker application rejected by a blogging conference I had previously attended as a panelist.

It made me realize that while I enjoyed writing and had a small yet loyal following, I was a virtual nobody in the blogging landscape after nearly three years. Ultimately, it was a good thing because it caused me to reflect on all the obsession, stress, and pressure I had placed upon myself to become a popular blogger. Constantly chasing numbers, feeling slighted over opportunities, watching analytics like a hawk, and feeling the sting of reality when none of my goals came to fruition.

I think bloggers everywhere will at least see a little piece of themselves in this song, but it’s primarily written to poke fun at the initial aspirations people have when starting a blog. While totally written in jest, the words certainly ring true in my case.

After writing these lyrics to Nickelback’s “Rock Star” I sought out a vocalist and was SO fortunate to find Suzi Lindner. She not only provided amazing vocals but she also did a fantastic job playing the song on acoustic guitar.

With that, I hope you enjoy! And if you do, I hope you share this post with others!

‘Cuz after all…

I still wanna be a blog star.

You’re killin’ me, Greg!

Does Jenny know you want to write a column with her?

PS: I’ve only made three figures with a sponsored post once. I’m really lucky if I make two figures every six months.

Well done and well played! I’m not a personal friend, only a FB one and a loyal follower of your blog. You’re so damn funny, I know you’re going to be famous and I’ll be able to say, “Yeah, I knew him when……” I check your blog and FB everyday because whatever you post always makes me laugh. Keep it up and your dream will come true!

It’s much easier to accept my lack of readership since I have no aspirations at all!

I’d settle for not being the shriveled worm at the bottom of the writing tequila bottle.

You are so funny. If you didn’t have to feed your kids and cats with a regular job, you’d be on the next NASA rocket to stardom.

Awe, I was so hoping this was the video version that you had asked us about providing a few months back. But hey, good job anyways!

Of the 37 bloggers who agreed to do it, only 5 sent in clips. It was too difficult to get that together so I had to go with lyrics only. :)

You are a very talented lyricist.
That was wonderful!

Too funny. I love parodies. These are mine.. lol. They aren’t about blogging, but rather teaching. I wrote them both for in-school competition between grade levels.

In our house, you and Jenny are both Blog Stars! We have your postcards to our girls in their scrapbooks, along with the pictures of “Flat Greg” they submitted to your blog last year, and we have Jenny’s book with her signed book label. I’d buy your book… I would love to have just a teeny tiny bit of the writing talent that you and Jenny have. Love this!!!!

I started following your blog because “The (great) Bloggess” mentioned you as one of the blog she reads. So glad I did! You’re awesome.

You need to seriously think about blogging with regularity though. I really like your blog but your frequent and very long absenceS make it difficult to keep checking your site :( [I blame adult ADHD] AND makes (at least) me feel like that this blog is dead last in your priorities. You really don’t need to wait to write an epic, Iliad-and-the-odyssey-esque length/quality piece everytime (although these are quite awesome) because short bursts of your humor every- say, 1 to 2 days can tide us over pretty good :).

Here’s to hoping you’ll write more! Rock on. \m/

You’ll get no competition from me. Like Karen, I have no aspirations for my blog. I started it as a means to vent frustrations – keeping a private journal just wasn’t cutting it. The blog is as anonymous as I can make it so I would not want to be a blog star even if I was in the running! :D
