If you’re confused by the media and political circus surrounding SOPA, don’t expect to find any better answers here. In a world piloted by agenda, it’s almost impossible to truly gauge a bill’s impact unless you take the time to weed through all the biased opinions and influence.
When I first got wind of this bill, I could see the pro’s and I could see the con’s. Those who favored the bill talked about wanting to preserve American jobs and protect intellectual rights. That’s a good thing, right? I can totally get behind that! Long live SOPA!
But then those who were against the bill talked about the threat of rampant censorship, friendly fire, and stifled innovation. That sucks. I hate those things. Down with SOPA!
It became blatantly apparent that until I knew more, I couldn’t rightfully support or protest the bill. Even though I couldn’t care less about protecting Hollywood’s bazillions, I knew it had to be more than that. Even though I supported free speech and an outlet for the masses, I knew there had to be more to it, and my vague broad-stoke understanding of the bill wasn’t enough for me to start championing it.
To passionately lobby one way or the other, you really need to understand the legislation at its core. You need to read how it is written and formulate your own stance based on fact rather than the opinions of those flooding an already bewildered mainstream media.
So, I took the time to do so, and after a few hours of research, I now understand SOPA and I now understand why it blows.
Just don’t ask me to explain it to you. I’d just screw it up. Much like if I were asked to provide driving directions to our house. I know where to turn and what to look out for when I’m at the wheel but you risk ending up in Nebraska if you expect me to jot down the route or scribble out a map.
For the record, I’m against SOPA. Like, WAY against it. To quote my 8-year old self, “I’m so against it it’s not even funny.” But still, I feel pretty helpless when it comes to doing anything about it. Then again, while I lack the millions of dollars it takes to properly control my Senators’ marionette strings, I do possess a voice. And I’ve used it.
Larger concerns, particularly those who are directly and indirectly threatened by the legislation, have taken a different strategical approach. In protest of the potential mockery of our Constitution, many monsters of the Internet are in the middle of a pledged 24-hour blackout. The intent is to help raise awareness about the potential bill and jam Congressional phone lines with irate callers. I have to imagine it’s working. People just won’t stand for a Wikipedia-less Internet.
Myself, I think a total blackout of TellingDad.com would be silly. First, I don’t think anyone would notice, so the impact of such a move would be about as effective as me picketing by myself in the deep woods. And second, I think a total blackout is a rather drastic step in light of the fact that everything will resume back to normal at midnight tonight.
Still, I see the justification for it and I support the validity behind it. So, to show my solidarity, I’m going to black out what probably could have caused my site to go viral. A photograph so extraordinary that it very well could have elevated me to elite blogger status. Yet here I stand, sacrificing the indisputable millions it could have generated, all in an effort to stand shoulder to shoulder with my geeky brethren.
No one said loyalty was cheap.
Don't blame me. Blame Congress.
When I took a look at SOPA’s sponsor, the ol’ curmudgeon really brought me back. Back to the days when my out-of-control and out-of-touch grandpa would hoard a remote control he had no business wielding.
Rather than face the potential threat that his grandchildren might somehow perhaps see something that could possibly be construed by some as maybe being improper, his solution was to control the remote and leave the television on Lawrence Welk reruns.
I have to believe that the supporters of this bill, at least at the Congressional level, only see the Internet in its general form. They don’t fully understand how it all works, the technological inner-workings at play, and the ripple effect they could cause by such a move. It’s like yanking out a car’s oil pan because it leaks and then expecting everything to be okay.
From what I’ve read, SOPA is rooted in good intentions but rife with rushes to judgment, misunderstandings, and completely misguided targeting. Until they fully understand what they’re restricting, shouldn’t they stand down and open some productive dialogue? Maybe bring in some experts who possess more knowledge than checks?
Metaphorically speaking, I hate fire ants, and I’d fully support a call to ban them. But I wouldn’t expect or even want my sponsored bill to also obliterate all the hard working and innocent non-biting ants in the process. I hate that the government feels they need MORE control, especially when it’s something placed in their ear by a handful of entertainment giants.
I think what we have here is a group of old school cronies completely out of touch and inexperienced with the digital world trying to control something they don’t fully understand. You need look no further than Jurassic Park or Independence Day to know how dangerous this line of thinking can be.
Perhaps one of you could hand Lamar Smith a few of these DVDs to enlighten him?
(Unpirated, of course.)

I encourage you to establish your own stance based on unbiased facts you uncover. I’ll just forewarn you now, it’s difficult to pluck them from the rhetoric.

Funny I just saw that video this AM while trying to figure it all out. All in all it comes down to the potential for misuse in so many ways. Don’t they have something better to waste time with in Washington?
For the record I despise politics with a passion. If someone pickets by themselves deep in the woods, are they really picketing or just carving their initials in a tree and other goofing off activities. Maybe that person could answer the tree falling question which would be much more beneficial than SOPA which without knowing would have thought that had something to do with Soap Operas.
Great job Greg, as usual! Too bad we will never get to see that picture though.
Only 4 minutes ago I was asking my boss exactly what this SOPA stuff was.
And I really feel like I should know, but I don’t. And it’s confusing. And it’s all governmenty. And well, isn’t there enough of that already?
I can’t explain how, but you did kinda clear the mud for me a little more.
It’s kinda like if one kid screws up and misses curfew, all of us kids are grounded and can no longer go out.
At all.
Kinda?
I’m still foggy. But less foggy after you. So, thanks.

The good news is that the black out is only for 24 hours – so we’ll all see the awesome photo tomorrow! Right?!?
While some Internet giants only have the will to carry their protest for 24 hours, I am steadfast.
Congress killed the photo.
It was awesome though. Life changing, even.
I am so tired of politicians coming up with ways to distract us from what a bad job they are doing.
Well played.

This is my first time posting on your site, but I think this issue is extremely important. The above link us a petition against sopa and pipa started by google. Share with your friends!
On a lighter note, I think you are absolutely hilarious and you make my day with schnanigans from your kids and various “almost dying” incidents. I do hope your finger is doing well. Continue what you are doing, we all need more laughter in our life, and thank you. (By the way, the ads are tastefully done)
I would have noticed Greg. I’d have missed you big time.
Keep up your terrific blog…and just a note, going viral ain’t all it’s crapped up to be..check out the recent news on one of the top “mommybloggers” website: it’s very sad, and one has to question the effect of having a viral blog had on the marriage…
So.Given how refreshing and decent and downright GOOD you are, to say nothing of incredibly funny, I’d rather have you a well kept secret, dearly loved by your wife and surrounded by your happy family, friends, neighbors and readers.
ps: Did the photo involve you? A Thong? Glistening beads of moisture? The kitchen? Perry AND a thong?? What!?! Give us a hint?
pss:SOPA .bites.
Very well written!
Great post!!!

“…SOPA is rooted in good intentions but rife with rushes to judgment, misunderstandings, and completely misguided targeting.”
Isn’t that normally the problem with our Politicians and the rules/regulations they want to implement? They are riddled with “good intentions” but then the bills come out thousands of pages long and we need lawyers to understand them and they are filled with unintended consequences.
FYI: If YOU think YOUR voice doesn’t matter, and everyone else thinks the same way, then no one will do anything. Every ONE voice DOES make a difference.

I love it and I agree. This is one of my favorite quotes (it may not be quite perfect…from memory) and I think we all need to remember it.
“I am only one, but still I am one. I cannot do everything, but still I can do something; and because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.” – Helen Keller
You may not feel like your voice is heard, but never speaking guaruntees that it won’t be.
Printed the bill out from the Library of Congress, read it all, went to contact my congressional representative in protest…
it’s L. Smith…
Thanks for helping to clarify this important issue! Great post…
Love the post, you have a great way of describing the difficulty of forming opinions on legeslation. I totally would have noticed if you blacked out, and for the record I am glad you didnt because I would not have wanted to miss out on this gem! By the way that picture, it was the first photographic evidence that the internet really is made of tubes wasnt it?
Greg, I’m not sure if you allow it here, but I’m going to try posting a link to another video for you & all here. It was done at Ted Talks, and really quite informative. It is about 13-14 minutes in length, and he gives a good breakdown and background on it, in quite easy to understand terms.

Great post!
I saw that video yesterday as well.
I myself saw the SOPA/PIPA acronym so many times yesterday that I started thinking about sopapillas.
So glad you joined in the political process! You became informed, made a decision, and took action…the new age of grass root politics…the web. I know, I am being too serious for you. You may just change your Clout, squirrels, canes and politics, lol. And thanks for not sharing the picture
I’m glad you’re against SOPA/PIPA. It is funded by the RIAA & the MPAA. It’s all about the almighty dollar, not saving anyone’s intellectual property rights. If these bills pass, we’re all screwed.
I also urge you to look up SB 1867, which was passed back in December. It’s the one that repealed DADT. Good thing, right? But it also allows for detention, sentencing and execution of American citizens without due process if they have been deemed “a threat” in some way. It’s broad language also lends itself to labeling anyone who speaks out against the government as treasonists. It also makes bestiality among soldiers OK. Nope, not kidding.
Just gotta say – I LOVE the fire ant analogy. Great post!

This is a great article! I love how you explained you side on the issue with full honest to goodness.
In my point of view, SOPA has good, even noble, intentions. I mean who wants to end online piracy? The problem comes in the sense that the mechanism to ensure that the internet is piracy-free is too harsh.
I hope someone can come up with an alternative bill that will satisfy everyone.

This is a great article. In my case, I’m truly against SOPA. The law on this type of cencorship is truly out of bounds.

Thank You, I am informed, I appreciate the work you put into this as I was getting snippets of what SOPA was about with out understanding. I am informed more today than I was yesterday.
Your blacked out photo looks more like my photos before any blackout.
SOPA has good, even noble, intentions. I mean who wants to end online piracy? The problem comes in the sense that the mechanism to ensure that the internet is piracy-free is too harsh. Now we have ASTA too.

It’s ACTA and it’s worse than SOPA/PIPA because it’s global. Any country who objects to anything in your website could have it shut down. Say you speak out against North Korea or China on your blog. They could compalin & have your site shit down by invoking ACTA and POOF! everything you’ve worked for is gone because you stated your opinion.
And currently there seems to be no stopping ACTA.
The whole thing is confusing to me. On one hand protecting digital content from piracy is a good thing, but one the other, the potential for abuse is huge. It’s like Eminent Domain should be used for good, instead it’s being used by private business to land-grab with government support.
