Okay, fine! If you all are this adamant about sending money for Dory, who am I to deny you.
I’m quite blown away by the display of generosity as I never expected, nor intended, for anyone to foot the bill for Dory’s surgery besides ourselves. But so many of you have requested to be able to donate that I’ve gone ahead and created a donation center via PayPal for those who want to contribute towards the tumor’s removal.
You can clearly see why we dubbed this campaign, "Neuter the Tumor"
Keep in mind that I still feel weird about this. We took on the responsibility of rescuing, adopting, and tending to Dory’s care knowing full well that we had no clue of the expenses that awaited. We all agreed as a family that making sacrifices in our own lives would be well worth it to ensure that Dory had the chance to live a dog’s life.
We have an appointment later this week with the vet to plan surgery and to get an accurate cost, but he’s telling us it will be in the range of $600-$800 to remove her tumor and perform the biopsy.
He feels the tumor is benign based on her bloodwork, lack of pain, and general nature of the tumor, but it was made clear that it absolutely must be removed. Quite honestly, we’d remove it even if he said it was completely practical for her to have a scrotum dangling from her head. It’s unsightly for her and no doubt a burden when she runs and plays.
If you need to read the story about Dory, you can do that here.
If you want to follow her Bucket List, you can do that here as well.
And, of course, if you’re among those who wanted to help contribute to her upcoming surgery, you can do that here:

A few notes:
- We’re unsure when the surgery will be but we know it will be at the end of August. The vet recommended that we continue to build her strength through love, attention, and nutrition so that she can easily handle the surgery.
- She’s having the surgery whether $1 or $600 is raised. This fund drive isn’t to make the surgery happen, that’s already a guarantee, so please don’t be driven by a sense of guilt or anything!
- Any funds received will simply be used to defray the cost and I’m only setting this up based on literally a dozen or more requests. The day the surgery occurs, this button and donation link will be removed.
- If, by some miracle, we raise more in donations than the surgery cost, anything that remains will be donated to the local no-kill animal shelter in our area. Every dime.
Thank you all for reaching out and sharing your own stories, words of encouragement, and Bucket List ideas. It’s meant a lot to us and I know Dory has no clue how many people are out there rooting for her. We’re quite stunned ourselves.
Back soon with lots of updates and a huge thank you to everyone. Donation or not, all of your thoughts and words mean the world to me.

Yay! I am so glad you agreed to allow us to help your family defray the costs of having this (admittedly crazy-looking) tumor removed. Owning and caring for a dog is expensive enough without the additional costs associated with surgery.
Can’t wait to hear more about Dory’s journey!
Hey just wanted to let you know I enjoy reading your blog (that tumor is amazing!). I got your blog addy from either Simple Dude or CitygirlBlogs. I have placed a link to your site on my “Good Reads” page. I will be back!
Poor Dori has suffered enough in her life. I can’t imagine having something that size hanging off my ear. Plus I think it would give me the heebee geebees.
You should be happy people have huge hearts and not feel one bit odd about Dori’s fundraiser. People will give because they want to help this sweet dog.
For some reason, I’m hearing ‘neuter the tumor!’ in Arnold Schwarzenegger’s voice.
Get well soon, Dory! You’re quite adorable, even with those testicles hanging off your face!
@Kristen – Bwahahaha! Thanks for that, now I hear him too. “Noo-tah the too-mah!”
And yes, she is adorable, but all I see are testes when she runs and bounces and plays. It has to go.
Poor baby. That is awful.
I have to say that it is really great of you to donate any excess, if there is any, to a no-kill shelter. You ROCK!
Kudos to you for showing Dory what life can be. Both our dogs are rescues, and one had a mild case of entropion that we had to fix and the other was abused and had a lot of fear. Both are doing great now. It’s amazing what love and trust will do!
Awww….poor baby! Our Husky, Bandit, had a benign tumor on his ribcage. We had it removed and then spent about two weeks laughing hysterically at his foibles wearing the Cone of Shame.
Sigh…I miss that sweet puppy, but he lived to be 18 yrs. old before finally going to sleep and not waking up one day.
Can’t wait to see the pictures of Dory with her “testicle” removed….She’ll be even more beautiful than she is now.
Dory is gonna feel so much better without her ball sack on her face.
Nothing like the love of an animal. Good luck, I’m not s fan of balls either.
