Sleep. Can someone tell me what that’s like?

by Telling Dad on November 13, 2009

sleepIt’s odd but that slice of bread actually looks REALLY comfortable right about now.

I need to forewarn you. This post will probably be completely incoherent but it’s really not supposed to be a legitimate post anyhow.

I am so tired. I have now had a grand total of 10 hours of sleep over the past three nights. I sort of feel like we have an infant again, only I’m the one who’s fussy.

Last night I was up working until 4am and had to wake up at 6:30am to get our hibernating 14-year old off to school. I figured I’d return and just fall back asleep, but NOPE.

All I did was lay there and think about all the things I could be doing if I wasn’t laying down. I love “making my own hours” and working from home, but not when I need to put in these 14-18 hour marathons. I suppose it’s better than not having work to do but my desire to never turn away a need has me pushed to the brink of narcolepsy…only I can’t make the final push.

I’m actually a little jittery as I write this which is really bizarre. I suppose I should eat something but who has time to open a can of Spaghetti-O’s? There’s work to be done, baby!

Aside from being a freelancer in the realm of writing, marketing, design, and SEO, I’m also busy cultivating the launch of our Pregnancy, Baby, and Parenting website over at Womb to Bloom. Then I make sure I do a certain amount of hours each week on pro-bono work for bloggers, site owners, and organizations (gotta keep that karma up).

Add in the fact that I’m having an absolute blast working with Boogie Wipes on a variety of totally kickin’ promotions (you just wait!) and you can see how my time gets taxed. Oh, and then there’s this lil’ blog of mine that fuels my passion. I love all you guys and gals!

I know what my wife would say if she were here. “You need to sleep. You need to eat. You need to stay hydrated. Go for a walk. Get some fresh air. Turn off the computer for a while. Recharge. Exercise. Rest.” She’s so kooky when she’s trying to keep me healthy. It’s cute.

But alas, my laundry list of things that need to get done is too long and my days are too short for a rest. I do see things easing come next Tuesday but no doubt another client will have a panic emergency come along to dash those hopes.

Well, I guess I should get back to work. I just felt it proper to explain why there won’t be a post today. Although, I may have just accomplished that anyhow by accident. Only I’m not entirely sure I’ll remember what I wrote by the time someone comments.

Oh. I know something else Heather would tell me. “Shower.” And this time, I agree. I can barely stand my own presence. I’m off to do that right now.

Ladies, feel free to thank me for the visual.

I agree with Heather. Drag yourself over to the microwave and get those Spaghetti-Os warmed up. Then take Larry for walk, he looks like he could use it. If that sounds too tiring then schlep on over the couch, move your laundry off of it and take power nap until the 14yo calls for a ride home.

Oh, the feeling of eternal grogginess. Yep. I know it well. And wouldn’t wish it on my worst enemy. Not fun. But you must do well in that situation, b/c your post didn’t suffer one bit!

Oh and btw, I hired someone to do a blog/header redesign for me. Going back to a 2-column design with a navigation bar to simplify things. Hope it helps to de-clutter!

I am right there with you, Greg. My husband was out of town for the last two weeks and I was up way too late every night. Note to self: sleep, shower, hydrate!

Hmm that slice of bread does look comfortable. I can relate… I admit to opting to crank out some work rather than taking that little bit of time to relax, eat, breathe… But you gotta do what you gotta do! Hopefully things settle for you soon and you can sleep!!

I can honestly say I know how you feel….after all here I am at 3:20am leaving a comment on your blog because I’m taking a break from my never ending schedule of “got to getter done”. It’s nothing a thick cup of coffee won’t cure.

That sounds about how I operate when my husband is gone. I just can’t sleep when he’s not home. I say shower, eat, sleep, then get back to work. Your work will thank you.

Sleep? Ha! Not when there’s brilliance to be created and plots to be hatched! I’d happily live on 10 hours of sleep over 3 nights if I could be do the cool work like you! Except, maybe, nobody would like me cuz I would be a biotch from lack of sleep. I don’t like myself much when I don’t get 8 hours…..

Aw! I empathize with the sleep thing…my sleeping pattern has been waaaay off base lately. But not because I’m totally awesome and productive like you are. Find some time to grab some snacks and a nap. You need to be fresh for all those creative juices to flow properly!

Oh and by the way, you have an award over at my blog, so the next time you wander over it’ll be waiting for you! :)

You definitely do need some rest. Maybe you can catch a nap? I think you should do what you think your wife would suggest – wives are good like that LOL

well, i thought my lack of sleep was bad, but I do believe you beat me. On Friday, I passed out at 10:30 and didn’t wake up until 9 a.m.

WHAT a night of sleeping!

Tiffany November 15, 2009 at 2:20 pm

Wow. I hope you get some time to kick back. I don’t know how you are even functioning at all. 10 hours in 3 nights is barely considered sleep.

Sleep? A Hot meal? Shower? What are those? You mean they exist?

Good for you on the karma…I am a strong believer in Karma…which when do I light the yearly candle anyway? I think it may be time. Enjoy your Sunday!

I know how you feel I use to sleep on 3-4 hrs a night when I was working but since last Tuesday I have been getting 6-7 hrs sleep. I love it but I need to find a job. Trust me I was living on 3-4 hrs sleep for the last 2.5 years and it is not healthy.

Man oh man, do I understand the lack of sleep right now. Between illness and trying to catch up on things, I think I’m KEEPING myself sick trying to stay on top of things versus just sit back and relax a few.

Lack of sleep catches up to you when one blogs. So many nites turning in at 3:30-4 am & you end up with one month of crashing at 7 pm. Why do I read so many blogs that say they have to remember to shower & eat? Take care of yourself guy! Heather is right!
