Reporting Live from IZEAFest!

by Greg on October 2, 2009

atizeaHey everyone! Sorry I’ve been so lacking in post updates but I have been on a whirlwind venture around the country.

I left Tuesday morning for L.A. to meet Nestle and then returned to Austin, Texas on Wednesday. Seven hours later I hopped on a plane to Orlando for IZEAFest. It was either sleep for 5 hours or post…I chose sleep. 🙂

It’s been a wonderful time thus far and I have tons to write about later, but for now, my focus is IZEAFest!

I am now sitting awaiting the start of the event and wanted to thank Boogie Wipes for sending me here to learn, to connect, and to expand our respective brands. I have lots of Boogie Wipes to distribute and buzz is abound.

For those at IZEAFest, you won’t need to read my updates, but you will want to seek out the tallest guy at IZEAFest (I believe) and connect. I’d LOVE to meet with all of you!

For those not at IZEAFest, I’ll be updating this post throughout each day with photos and happenings. It should be a blast and there WILL be stories to tell. And if there aren’t enough? I’ll make some. 🙂

For now, know that I’ve eaten breakfast and we’re just awaiting commencement. Not all that thrilling…yet. But for those who are dying to know…I had yogurt and a croissant.

I promise that all future updates will be far more interesting. Until lunch.

IZEA Log :: Stardate:: Friday 10:30am EST
As the fifth wheel among four friends who have been absolutely wonderful (@themombuzz @susan70070 @lkwhtmomfound @pbandsdad on Twitter), we arrived at IZEA registration at 7am.

stage

We were the first to arrive…not because we were eager to register, but because we wanted to make sure we signed up for the “limited space available” Scavenger Hunt tomorrow! THAT whole scene will be blog fodder, I guarantee it! I’ll have photos and video from that.

We started the morning by chatting with others, swapping freebies, and enjoying some quick introductions. Boogie Wipes enjoyed a nice buzz as people were loving their inclusion in the goody bags my wonderful peeps distributed.

We enjoyed a great humorous start to IZEAFest as Ted Murphy’s brother impersonated him and mocked him without restraint. Ted’s lessons on “Personal Branding” were encouraging and I’m sure the segment will be available online somewhere. 🙂

He asked the 400+ people here to come up with a statement that defined us and defined our blog. I simply chose the tagline you see above, “A Blabbermouth with a Purpose”. It truly does define me.

I love to talk, I love to write, and I love to interact…thus, the Blabbermouth.

And I love to make people laugh, engage them, and raise awareness for my Sweet Dreams Fund…thus, the Purpose.

I was called on stage and asked to share this…which I did even with 400 people staring back at me. 🙂 Everyone was truly kind and the applause helped settle the nerves. It really is a wonderful assembly of people.

Anyhow, Ted hooked me up with a free set of Sennheiser headphones. That was really great, especially since my 17-month old daughter destroyed my last pair of Sennheisers. That was really cool. I think some people saw it on the live stream and it was neat to see a few Tweets about it. 🙂

Well, we’re about to start the segment on SEO and social media marketing. I eat this stuff up so I’m going to sign off now. Sorry for the quick and short update bursts but there is a lot of activity and I want to share as much as I can even if it’s not all that fluid. 🙂

Back later! Until then, enjoy some IZEA ducks.

IZEA Log :: Stardate:: Friday 2:15pm EST
I won’t bore you with all the marketing and social media mumbo jumbo that we’re learning but know that it’s available online should you want to get a little peek into what we’re learning.

I’ve had several people come up and ask if I’m “telling dad” or “the boogie wipes guy” so that has been really cool. The fact that they can recognize me even though my illustration has for more hair than I do in real life is impressive.

Reps from Sea World came in and talked about the park, Busch Gardens, and more. A sea lion made a brief appearance but got freaked out and left before he hit the stage. On the plus side, they brought in a few other animals for us to meet. I asked for a pic with the sloth and even got to pet it. It was really freaky-looking but adorable all the same.

To top off the session they handed out Shamu ice cream bars and the IZEAkids were giddy. 🙂 Right now, we’re getting started on an SEO session and it is absolutely excellent.

The balance of the afternoon is going to touch on social media marketing and exposure so I don’t want to trigger yawns by those completely uninterested in that. So, my next update will come tonight after we return from the Ice Bar as that should be good for some fodder!

More later! In the meantime, enjoy a photo of the Shamu bar. Be envious…it was good!

IZEA Log :: Stardate:: Saturday 10:45am EST
I intended on updating last night after Ice Bar but simply didn’t have the energy. Not because I was loaded up on drinks but because it was a long day! The Ice Bar was pretty cool, and by cool, I mean FREEZING.

iblogo

While we were able to get in for free thanks to IZEAFest, other Floridians actually pay money to see what life is like for those who live in the northern part of the United States. As I walked into the Ice Bar I got flashbacks from my days in New York. All the memories of waking up early to snowblow the driveway, all the frozen whiskers, and all the numb extremities.

For those who don’t know, the Ice Bar is made entirely of ice. From the walls to the furniture to the decorations. Even the glasses you drink from are made of ice, which led to some stuck lips and tongues. You enter through a freezer door, which is appropriate, because the room is kept at a balmy 27 degrees. While still 20+ degrees warmer than most of our winter days back in New York, it was still a shock to the system.

Before you enter, you’re given a cold-weather poncho and a pair of gloves so that you don’t completely freeze. The poncho fit great but check out the gloves they hand out.

ibglove

What am I? Seven? The girl did say that they’d “stretch” but much of my hand was exposed. Truth be told, you really don’t need the gloves…until you hold a glass. The ice glasses were pretty neat but very thick so that they didn’t break. They reminded me of glasses from the Flintstones, and even though they were a challenge to drink from, it didn’t stop anyone from trying.

Myself and the wonderful group of peeps who have allowed me to horn in on all of their happenings took some pics, brought Erin from The Mom Buzz to the brink of frostbite, and then re-entered warmth. We were all pretty whipped so we actually left before 10pm, which is pretty sad, because 15 years ago I would have just been getting started at 10pm.

ibpic

Overall, the first day at IZEAFest was a rousing success. Lots of Boogie Wipes were distributed, connections made, and knowledge learned.

I’m actually writing this during our little break so I need to get back to it! I’ll update again later this afternoon, right before we kick off with the Scavenger Hunt. THAT will be a blast and “The Boogie Crew” is ready to scramble around Orlando in search of all kinds of crazy things.

Until then, enjoy this picture of a frozen penguin.

I think you also had two OJ's if I am not mistaken for a grand total breakfast price of $30. Yes he is the tallest one here and I might be the second. LOL. Rock on IZEAFest!!!!!!!

One of these years I will make it to all this fun stuff *sigh*. Hey, if you have any left, send some Boogie Wipes my way!! (plluulleeeaaazzee). The community I live in is a Boogie Wipes wasteland. Not a precious Boogie Wipe to be had in this town. Myself and a friend have been working with Molly and Kim at Boogie Wipes to get some here…but we've had a tremendous amount of SNOT in our lives and our stash is running low. Plus we want to share with our local Mom group/

Great post Greg! I am glad you are a blabbermouth with a purpose!
