While my wife remained huddled away in the juror’s gallery in a Texas courtroom, no doubt flirting with the defendant, I continued my role as Mr. Mom and drove to Michael’s school for pick-up.
In typical Michael fashion, he skipped to the van with his teacher, gave Kamryn’s noggin’ a rub as she squealed hello, and hopped into his seat.
Me: “How was school today, Michael?”
Michael: “Great! But do you know what I missed while I was in Challenge Lab?”
(Sidenote: Challenge Lab is where teachers send students who get their work done early. Instead of being left to daydream they are given additional tasks to work on).
Me: “No, what did you miss?”
Michael starting to cry inconsolably: “Chocolate caaaaaaaaaaaaaaake!”
Me: “Whoa, why are getting so upset? It’s just a piece of cake, honey?”
Michael through his tears: “But everyone gets two layers now. TWO!”
Me: “Well, you’ll live, it’s just a piece of cake.”
Michael burying his head in his hands: “Why did I have to be smart?”
While I didn’t condone his overly dramatic meltdown, I did wonder why a few pieces of cake weren’t set aside for the 3rd grade nerdlings.
The last thing we want is for students to stifle their academic progress because they fear missing out on some treats.
I can’t speak for everyone, but Michael’s love for chocolate isn’t something to toy with. My wife’s genes are in there somewhere and I know how she gets when it comes to the denial of chocolaty goodness.
She’s probably firing off a complaint to the school board as I write this. Not because Michael didn’t get a piece of chocolate cake, but because he wasn’t given a piece to bring home to her.
Even without Michael’s predisposition to chocolate addiction, we’re still talking about an 8-year old here. A little mini-human who values sweets over all else. Compulsion is a powerful thing and if we’re going to foster education, we can’t give kids the choice between extra schoolwork or cake. The latter will win out every time.
So set a slice aside, or better yet, schedule the party at a time when everyone can attend. If you’re gonna get these kids all hopped up on sugar before you send them home to their parents, at least make sure ALL the kids have an equal opportunity to have glucose coursing through their veins.
Between you and me, I really don’t care. The less chocolate the better. (Sidenote: I realize this quote is grounds for divorce in fourteen states, but we live in Texas where it only applies to gunplay).
But I’m not worried about him missing out on goodies, I’m worried about him worrying about missing out on goodies and then choosing said goodies over Challenge Lab.
Teachers of America, I implore you, support chocolate equality.
If not for your classroom, then for our nation’s youth. In the immortal words of some queen somewhere who recognized the importance of education…”Let Them Eat Cake!”
Rally behind the cause!

@Cat – My wife doesn't know where the candy bars are stashed. Bloodhounds specially trained to sniff out cocoa couldn't find these.
You know my husband doesn't really like chocolate either. I think it must be a man thing. Tell him there will be a time where he will make more than other kids and he can buy all the chocolate in the world. Thats what nerds are good for.

@Rhea, lol, sorry – one bar per person. If I allowed multiples I have little doubt someone would have 24 banners on their site in no time.

http://throughhazeleyesblog.com/ I support chocolate, and youth. My hubby is also not a fan of chocolate, when I buy chocolate cake, my son and I eat it all. So I only get chocolate cake on mine and his Birthdays. I totally see where you're coming from though, the teacher should have waited!

I agree with you, I would be concerned that next time he's going to be worried about missing a treat so maybe he wont work as hard. I'm surprised the teachers didn't wait for everyone to be in class. Shame on them.

LOL. I support nerdlings and their disadvantages of missing out on the finer things of life due to the pursuit of learning. I understand completely, my daughter who is a tad on the bright side missed out on all the fun things the class did when she was broadening her horizons. Now we homeschool her so it's a chocolate cake free for all around here!!
Although I wonder why my husband is a HUGE fan of chocolate, seriously the man is never without (I eat very little actually). When we are down to one or two bags of mini's you'd think there was a famine coming on with the need he charges to the store to refill his stash!

Tell Michael that "Aunt Beccie" will bake him a 3 or 4 layer chocolate cake with his choice of frosting flavors (Peanut butter included) and he will not have to share it with anyone! Wrong of the teaching staff to do that! Let Heather know she will get her own truffle cake so she does not need to steal Michael's.
Damn you and your chocolatey ways, Greg! Whyyyy did you have to go and post that sumptuous, lovely, delicious morsel of AWESOME up there? Damn you, I need to go run 4 miles right now and hope afterwards I don't crave that.. yummy… chocccc.. {drool}
DAMMIT!

@Shan – Our oldest is home schooled two days a week as he attends a 'University Model' school.
@Erin – I have lifted the '24' limit. Anyone who posts it before 11:59pm EST on Friday will qualify for the freebie chocolate!
Dude you SO owe me some chocolate! http://www.southernbellaswaystosave.com/ Right hand sidebar above sponsors! I totally agree with you. My son has had to miss out on extra computer time/recess etc for going to specials. (Like the same thing you were talking about it and 3rd grade as well) Chocolate Equality!!!

I posted on my FB page–does that count? I'm still always about the chocolate!
I have a 6 year old son Shaun who LOVES his sweets also and would have done the same thing when he got the the car. Well, he probably would have burst out into a full cry but that is a whole other story. Kids love sweet so I know how he feels. Stinks the teacher didn't set any aside for him.
