Hello, I’m giving you my 88-week notice.

by Telling Dad on November 20, 2009

oprahI never thought I’d ever write a blog post about Oprah unless it was to thank her for having me on her show.

But this announcement of hers is just insane.

CNN and MSNBC are all aflutter with headlines, video montages, and “fan reaction” after Oprah deflated the world by announcing that she was quitting her show.

In September of 2011.

Are you sure this is enough notice? Can the planet prepare for such a void in this amount of time?

I’m actually a fan of hers and I think she’s done absolutely wonderful things for women, impoverished people, and those who needed a shoulder to cry on. She’s inspired millions and even gave birth to Dr. Phil LIVE on the air. But come on y’all, 22 months notice?

I’m not a researcher, nor do I have the energy to look it up, but is this the longest span of time between announcement and office-packing in the history of the world? Even the president of the United States is only given a few months to gather his things and leave the most powerful office on earth. And Oprah needs 22 months?

I suppose this will at least lend credence to all the doomsday theorists who think the world will end in 2012. Because when you think about it, a planet without Oprah isn’t really a planet at all.

The DOW plunged 44 points since her official announcement and gas at our local Chevron jacked up two cents. Oprah’s departure is already killing the economy and it’s not even a day old. If this trend keeps up between now and September 2011 the stock market will drop 27,104 points and gas will cost $12.32 a gallon. Thanks a lot Oprah.

In the months leading up to her departure I encourage everyone to save gas, hoard food, and stay indoors. It’s going to get bumpy. I’m just thankful I have enough time to sit with my children and explain why the nation is in turmoil.

For those who worry about Oprah being able to make it on a fixed income after she leaves her show, never fear, she’ll make do. Consider this excerpt from CNN.

In 2008, Winfrey announced that beginning in 2009, the Discovery Health Channel would be named OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network. The network is “a multi-platform media company designed to entertain, inform and inspire people to live their best lives,” according to Oprah.com.

Could there be a more appropriate acronym than “OWN”?

Thanks for the heads up Oprah. I suppose 88 weeks is enough time for the global community to enter and exit the five stages of grief.

The headlines state that “Winfrey announces the end of Oprah”. I think America knows that this is only the beginning.

Prepare yourselves. Prepare for Oprahpalooza in all facets of the mainstream media.

Well. The bright side to this is that we’re going to see Oprah with health tips and what-not.

I worry about the lady who was at the middle school parent night. She had so many concerns from watching Oprah. “I saw on Oprah that these kids beat up another kid on the bus…how are you going to keep our 6th graders safe from the 8th graders?” Later on there was another “I saw on Oprah…” concern, followed by yet another and another. I wonder how she’s going to be able to live not knowing all the things she should be worried about? It took much constraint to keep from hollering “Stop watching Oprah!”

Now employers aren’t going to be happy with just two weeks notice, they are going to expect two years. Thanks a lot Oprah.

Geez! her own network for crying out loud. Oh and I get the acronym there..OWN HA! Oprah Winfrey network…So clever. I do agree she has done alot for women and people in general but so have I and I don’t have my own network and makes millions of dollars. Hopefully soon though the WORLD will love me. ’cause I am like so cool you know? :) )

What did you expect with an ego like that? It’s the same as when athletes announce BEFORE their final season starts that this is it. They want all the attention and goodbyes from everyone. Nothing sells tickets, or ads, better than a “farewell” tour.

I am very afraid of what is to come….is OWN for real? I believe it…I really do. Honestly, she annoys the crap out of me. I don’t agree with her views – and that is fine cause I don’t agree with a lot of talk show hosts :)
I am worried about what else she has up her sleeve, cause you know she isn’t quitting her show to to lay around on some remote island

Actually, I like Oprah. As such a public figure, she most likely had to make an announcement herself, because we all know that with the financial/administration of getting such a new venture undertaking, there would be “leaks.” Oprah did it her way.

Theory: Oprah announced that she’s retiring and buying a network just a few days after she asks Sarah Palin if it was true was going to get a talk show. I think she has offered Palin a job.

Hahaha, I love Oprah. Though I haven’t watched her show in ages, I do glance thru her magazine while waiting in line at the grocery store. I like what she stands for an how she supports people living their life “on purpose” – but seriously, the ending of her show is just the beginning of something else huge – so I dont really understand what the big deal is with the show ending anyways… it isnt like it will be the last we hear of her.

SO well put. I like Oprah, I think her show’s time has come, though, and it should be before 2011. 88 weeks. Interesting. She does have that holier than most aura, so I’m not surprised. Even if I do like her … some. ;)
